We Love Bury St Edmunds!

Costume Team

Help to recreate characters from a range of historic eras. Get immersed in the people from the past, their clothes, lives and times. Work with a team to research and create costumes which will help to bring The Guildhall experience to life.

Help source props and tools for re-enactments. From Medieval herbalists, to Tudor Cooks, Georgian Court clerks to the Second World War Observer Corps – countless characters, famous and unknown are waiting to tell their stories. Act as a dresser, support costumed interpreters in getting dressed correctly ready to go into role.

What could I be doing?

You’ll probably have some knowledge or willingness to learn about costume making or maintenance. If you’re a bit handy with a needle – that would help, but don’t worry if not – we also need researchers, people to source materials and props or tools for re-enactment days. You might like to dress up to take part in them too!

What might a typical day involve?

Depending on current projects and your time available, you could research Medieval merchants’ headdresses and source the ideal materials for the sewing team.

Meet team members and decide on what’s still needed to complete the costumes you’re working on together. Join the sewing team to work on the set of simple Tudor caps and aprons for school groups to use.

As part of the fortnightly costume maintenance group you’re working on the costume for the 19th Century Clerk to the Court which needs some attention. The Family Fun day will feature a Tudor Cook. We have the basic costume for the character, it just needs a different collar.

Sounds like it could be your sort of thing? What next?

We are open to the public 10:00am-4:00pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and 11:00am-4:00pm on Sundays. You are invited to pop in and see us at work, to find out more about volunteering roles.
