Richard Meyerowitz, Property Consultant from Fine and Country Bury St Edmunds, set himself the task of cycling 2,500 miles in 2018. This is the most enduring cycle challenge ever attempted for homeless charity, The Fine & Country Foundation.
Richard will race in or around the Suffolk area. His first organised race is the “Ipswich Cycle Swarm on Sunday” 30th September. The 100 mile race will bring the riders through Woodbridge, Farmlingham and onto Dennington. The stunning scenery and momentum from cheering crowds will make this a stunning day.
Richard will spend the remaining months of 2018 cycling in competitive races and recreational training to build up to 2,500 miles. In his spare time, Richard is an avid member of Stowmarket District Cycle Club and trains with them twice a week. Each training session will bring Richard approximately 50 miles closer to reaching his target. His races however, will add a further 100 miles or more to Richard’s total.
By the beginning of August, Richard cycled more than 900 miles. Richard needs to cycle another 1,600 miles to reach his target by December this year. The challenge is comparable to cycling from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk to Adana in Turkey, which currently puts Richard the equivalent of Salzburg in Austria.
Richard said: “This challenge has made me realise how tough it must be to live on the streets. I have found it difficult to build my mileage because of the heatwave, but I know that I can come home after each cycling session and cool off. To be outside and exposed in the prolonged heatwave must be so difficult, and that is aside from the psychological issues many suffer from while homeless.
“The nutritional requirements for the challenge require me to burn around 2000-3000 calories in a single 50 mile ride. I am so fortunate to be able to fuel myself by eating well at home. This is a luxury and something that I want everyone to be able to afford: a healthy diet.
“The money raised will help those who need it most, but it cannot be done without your help. Please find it in your heart to support my cause and make a real difference to someone’s life, every penny raised for The Fine and Country Foundation will go directly to homeless projects and causes.”
Richard is raising money to support The Fine and Country Foundation’s autumn grant pot. Throughout October, registered homeless charities in the UK and overseas can apply for up to £3,000 of funding. The spring programme was a huge success with more than £60,000 given to 17 homeless charities across the world.
Richard would love to see lots of friendly faces along the way. To join Richard’s training or races, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call +44 (0)20 3368 8221.
