Our market in Bury St Edmunds has a wonderful history and has been part of many people’s lives over the years. How many people worked on the market, bought their first pair of jeans or items for their first home off the market or just met their friends or their loved one on market day ‘under the clock’.
If you have any market memories we would love to hear from you. On Wednesday 16th May and Saturday 26th May, we will be having our own ‘pop up market museum’ in the market place. We are looking for original images or artefacts relating to the market or the cattle market. All the best images will be copied and displayed in our museum and will be judged on Wednesday 16th May by the Mayor with the winner receiving a £25 voucher to spend on the market.
There will also be free tea and cake served by St Benedict’s School pupils on Wednesday 16 May. The pupils will be collating market memories as part of an oral history project.
The pop up museum is part of the national Love Your Local Market fortnight. Bury St Edmunds market won a national award for its community work during last year’s Love Your Local Market fortnight after working closely with pupils from St Benedict’s School on a Puppet Parade.
You can share you memories and photos under the post on We Love Bury St Edmunds’s Facebook group. If you have any other memorabilia that you are happy to loan, then please contact [email protected] westsuffolk.gov.uk
